To The Coward Who Murdered Flora,
We don’t know who you are yet but there are things we do know. You are a coward. You are a freak who derived a sadistic, pleasurable adrenaline rush when committing your heinous violence against an innocent creature. Was it enough for you? Probably in the moment...perhaps you’ve done it before ? But this time your twisted psyche craved much more, so it was time to up the ante and make this a “public” act. It does not go unnoticed that you chose to stage this killing in a playground meant for children.
Chances are you are gloating with all the media coverage and frenzied response from the community and you are enjoying every minute of this. I would almost bet you will be among the crowd at the vigil for Flora today. Statistically speaking, you will probably repeat the violence but each time you do so, you will have to do it in a bigger and better fashion because that rush that feeds your twisted, broken mind just won’t equal the last act. Are you relishing the “power trip” of having exterminated a life in such a gruesome, horrendous way?
You are swapping stories and laughing about that terrified dogs’ last moments while the rest of us cry, scream and question why this had to happen, aren’t you?
I wonder how proud your mother or father would be if they knew what you did, but again, statistically speaking, your behavior is probably a by product of what you are/were subjected to. The cycle of violence is often repetitive. This abhorrent behavior is mostly learned, becoming inherent, but in no way excusable or acceptable in a civilized society. The nexus between animal abuse and escalating intrapersonal/domestic violence is well documented but we’ll leave that for the professionals. Those of us in animal rescue know too well how to connect those dots.
Sadly, we have something in common. We both know that not much will be done to you under the current laws if and when you are caught. After all, “it’s just a dog,” not a person that you committed such a heinous crime against. Those of us in rescue would like to be judge, jury and executioner when you are found, but we are cognizant of the fact that we can’t. Our wiring is intact. We are not broken and we are law abiding, like the community in which you chose to demonstrate that you have absolutely, no guts, no soul and no capacity to function as “normal”. You have enraged an entire city. Your act has disgusted and saddened the community and you need to be caught and kept away from the innocent life in that community, be it animal or human. Hanging Flora was not a prank, or an act of boredom, or whatever the hell else you think it was. What you chose to do was a blatant breach of law, civil law, moral law and God’s law and it will not go unpunished. It was violence, the worst of its kind, inflicted upon an innocent, indefensible dog who suffered needless and cruelly to satisfy your blood lust. It is time to separate the wheat from the chaff and it begins with you. We will not tolerate these abhorrent acts of animal cruelty. The time has come, the time is now. Let us call upon our animal advocacy community and our lawmakers to make it so by drafting and enacting tougher legislation on this issue. Let us honor the short life and despicable death of Flora in the best possible way by calling for the drafting of Flora’s Law. Let us not only remove these offenders from our community, but make it mandatory that they undergo intense psychiatric evaluation and treatment. It is time to stop putting Band-Aids on hemorrhaging wounds and it begins with legislative change. We cannot allow Flora’s death be a senseless statistic. She is representative of the too many acts of cruelty upon animals that cowards have to be held accountable for.
Flora, you sweet, precious girl, you have crossed to a better place and we promise upon your name never to forget your suffering moments. There will be justice for you, we promise, girl.
